چکیده

This dissertation investigates the design and analysis of vehicular and pedestrian models. A type of vehicular model is developed both to offer novel contributions to vehicle behavior modeling as well as to use as a tool to learn how to create an even more complex behavioral model of pedestrian movement. First, the current state of modeling is investigated including purely behavioral studies and engineering modeling techniques. Behavioral studies are drawn largely from the field of urban affairs and planning while engineering modeling methods are drawn from civil engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Second, a model of vehicular traffic is constructed by first implementing existing work in software. Existing work focuses on single lane traffic, so we next extend the model to support lane changing in multiple lanes. The new mathematical rules are implemented in software and effects of lane changing then studied. The model contributes new capabilities to the field and provides experience to next create a more complex pedestrian model. Third, an algorithmic model of pedestrian movement is created. At its simplest level, steering rules are used that are drawn from the literature. New rules and models are created to support groups and simple social interaction. Learning and memory are then modeled so that simulated pedestrians are human-like in ways that have an effect on congestion. Fourth, software is developed that implements the model. While the model offers a means, i.e., function parameters, for calibration, an implementation must exist to take advantage of that. The software is designed using an object-oriented

TraForSafe Vehicular and pedestrian traffic models: from flow forecast to safety management

This research project deals with the modelling and simulation of traffic flows, whereof vehicular traffic on road networks has historically been one of the motivating applications [1]. Nevertheless, the methodological approach promoted in the project is suitable to tackle also similar systems, such as pedestrian flows and their interplay with the built environment, which are nowadays receiving ...

Pedestrian and Vehicular Traffic Characteristics for Synthetic-Hybrid Mobility Models

Synthetic mobility models can be used to simulate the movement of a traffic unit or a group of traffic units in a telecommunication network. Characteristics of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, such as speed-flow, speed-density and flow density are often neglected in current synthetic mobility models. The analysis, emulation and simulation of telecommunication networks with mobile users using m...

The calibration of vehicle and pedestrian flow in Mangalore city using PARAMICS

This paper presents a traffic simulation approach for evaluating the pedestrian behaviour by developing a model which includes pedestrians in a vehicular micro-simulation model i.e. PARAMICS that provides a default mechanism for simulating pedestrian movements. This approach is demonstrated by using a case study of a signalized intersection having large pedestrian flow interacting with large ve...

A Bi-Modal Microsimulation Tool for the Assessment of Pedestrian Delays and Traffic Management

There is now increasing emphasis on managing the urban transport for the benefit of all road users, particularly on the promotion of walking and cycling as more environmentally friendly modes of transport. Dynamic traffic signal controls in respond to pedestrian demand have been developed which give the flexibility and control to the network controllers to manage pedestrian and vehicle interact...

Tracking System to Automate Data Collection of Microscopic Pedestrian Traffic Flow

To deal with many pedestrian data, automatic data collection is needed. This paper describes how to automate the microscopic pedestrian flow data collection from video files. The study is restricted only to pedestrians without considering vehicular pedestrian interaction. Pedestrian tracking system consists of three sub-systems, which calculates the image processing, object tracking and traffic...
